San Francisco MOMA
I just got home from a trip to San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art. This was my second visit to MOMA. Andrea and I went together, on a trip organized by housing and residence life at the university.
My favorite paintings were those from Matisse. I had never paid much attention to Matisse. I didn't really know who he was before today and I wouldn't have been able to pick out his work if asked to. Now I have a strong appreciation for his art - mostly his creative use of color. It's as if he was challenging the "normal" use of color by painting things in hues of his liking. He also challenged the depth of painting, but using warm colors, which pop out at the viewer, to paint objects in the distance. He also paired complementary colors, creating visual interest. My two favorite works of his are pictured below.
Andrea and I took a tour at MOMA. The tour guide was an art teacher who also appreciated 20th century music. He carried around his boom box in the gallery and played music which corresponded with the paintings we were studying. This combination was very powerful at evoking emotions. The music enriched the art, and the art also enriched the music.
What a great Sunday spent in San Francisco. I don't think I will watch the Super Bowl tonight, sorry to disappoint all you sports fans out there. There will be no blog about the Super Bowl. :)
